Cold Weather, Solid Ice, and Plenty of Action
Vega Reservoir - Mesa, CO
Ice conditions across Western Colorado have held strong, especially at higher elevations. Most lakes in Mesa, Garfield, and Rio Blanco Counties are maintaining solid ice thickness, ranging from 10 to 16 inches in most areas. Recent cold nights have kept the ice stable, but always use caution near inlets, outlets, and pressure ridges.
Anglers are reporting steady action on rainbow trout and yellow perch at Rifle Gap Reservoir, especially during early morning and late afternoon. Jigging small spoons tipped with mealworms or waxworms has been effective in 10 to 20 feet of water. Brown trout have also been active, with a few quality fish being caught closer to structure.
At Vega State Park, trout are cruising shallow flats in the mornings. Try downsizing your presentation—light jigs with salmon eggs or artificial plastics are working well. Harvey Gap is producing perch and some pike action, particularly for those staying mobile and drilling multiple holes to locate active fish.
With clearer skies in the forecast and stable temperatures, this weekend looks ideal for a trip. Don’t forget to bring extra layers, a valid fishing license, and any required permits for access. Captain Jason Shafer continues to guide groups to the most productive ice, helping clients find the right spot based on conditions and their fishing preferences.
